FIVE Banyana Banyana stars have received R100 000 each from the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, Nakedi Kekana.

The footballers include Lebogang Ramalepe, Noko Matlou, Nomvula Kgoale, Hilda Magaia and Amogelang Motau.

They were promised the money a year ago during a welcome ceremony in Limpopo after they won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The event was held on Sunday, 4 December at the Ranch Hotel in Limpopo.

About 20 winners walked away with cash prizes starting from R15 000.

These winners included Nakedi Raphako (Coach of The Year), Renuka Ramroop (Sport Administrator of The Year), Safiya Khan-Patel (Newcomer of The Year), Limpopo Softball Men’s Team (Team of the Year), Gary Bauer (Sportsman of The Year), Boitumelo Mahloko (Sportswoman of The Year), Nathi Kubyane (Journalist of The Year) and Herbert Rachuene (Photographer of The Year) and Ncuba Team (Indigenous Games Team of The Year).

School Team of the Year award went to Helen Franz Special School Wheelchair Tennis Team and Sheryl James won Sports Woman of The Year With Disability.

The last award for Developing School Team of The Year was won by Kopanong Primary School Cricket Team.

The department spent not less than R6.5million in making sure the sporting world is well incentivised.

MEC Kekana also honoured boxing legend James “Dynamite” Mathato with the MEC’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Dynamite received R50 000 sponsored by Standard Bank and R10 000 from Sports Academy.

“Dynamite will also be recommended to the National Sports Awards, which will be held in early 2023. He was not only representing Limpopo in the 1970s but was a South African champion. Therefore, he deserves all the recognition.

“We are also proud of the men and women in the development of sport. Those who sweat day and night with no prospect of incentive. We are proud of those young girls and young boys who aspire to reach the top and play for both Banyana Banyana and Bafana Bafana in the future,” said the MEC.
