SUSPECTS accused of killing University of Zululand professor Gregory Kamwendo (53) appeared in the Empangeni Magistrates Court yesterday.

According to a police source in Empangeni, northern KZN, their appearance follows their arrest on Thursday.

They allegedly killed Kamwendo in May.

Kamwendo from Malawi, who was an executive dean at the university, was shot dead at his home in Empangeni.

According to the police source, one of the arrested men was a former lecturer at the same university.

“Kamwendo’s death allegedly came a short while after he uncovered the truth about fraudulent PhDs that were given to students in this university.

“Among the two suspects who were arrested is a lecturer who lost his job as a result of the truth that was uncovered by Professor Kamwendo,” said the police source.

The police source said the arrest came after they carefully pieced together information of who the suspects were during their investigation, which they instituted following the professor’s death.

The source said the first suspect was arrested in Empangeni, while the second one was arrested in Newcastle.

University spokeswoman Gcina Nhleko said: “The university reserves its right not to comment on this matter as police processes are unfolding.”

Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane told the People’s Paper: “The suspects are facing a murder charge following the opening of a case in the Empangeni cop shop.”

The suspects were remanded in custody until 12 December for a formal bail application.
