The Social Development MEC, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, together with the Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi have joined forces with musician and TV personality, Kabelo Mabalane to launch a documentary series titled Kick It.

The series was launched this week at the Maboneng Precinct in down town Johannesburg.

The 13-part TV series will be aired every Friday evening at 20h30 starting tonight on SABC 2

The show aims to give insight into the world of substance abuse by taking a serious look at the effects of substance abuse at all levels in communities.

It is presented by Kabelo Mabalane who is one of the ambassadors of the Gauteng City Region Social Movement Against Substance Abuse.

One of the aims of the show is to mobilize communities to join hands with government in upscaling efforts to fight substance abuse.

“This documentary is one of many responses to a clarion call that we are indeed: 'Realising the Dream of A Drug Free Gauteng City Region: Pulling the Plug on Drugs and Alcohol Abuse” as the theme of the Gauteng City Region’s Anti-Substance Abuse Social Movement launched on the 4th March 2016 by the Hon Premier Mr David Makhura.

“It is intended as a tool to bring to a halt, a growing danger that places our society on a path to self-destruction. It proves that as a people, we have managed to put aside everything else to address the problem of drugs in communities like we should, as a community.  This war can only be community driven and communities must take charge in tackling this social pathology,” said Mayathula-Khoza.

“Abuse of substances is amongst the major challenges South Africa is battling. It is estimated that the annual economic costs associated with alcohol abuse could be between 0,5 percent and 1,9 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product. This translates to about R8, 7-billion a year, and with the addition of drugs, a conservative figure is about R10-billion a year”, she added.

Show host Kabelo Mabalane, a recovering addict himself who has turned his life around for the better, will be driving the narrative from his own personal perspective on a mission to help others to KICK IT!
