YOLANDA Yawa always wanted to change the face of the doll-making business.

The 42-year-old from Gugulethu, Cape Town, makes and sells black dolls.

She started her company, Luvuthando Dolls, in January last year to ensure black kids had dolls that looked like them.

“I felt there wasn’t representation for the black child to be able to embrace who they are and see how unique and special they are,” she said.

Yolanda said she believed not having dolls that looked like them could harm kids’ confidence.

Among the dolls she made was an albino called Khanya.

Yolanda said she believed people with albinism needed to embrace themselves.

She said all the dolls were princesses and had African names.

Princess Nala was named after her mum’s clan name. The other dolls’ names were Sinentle, Aya, Minathi, Sihle and Muhle. They were named after her nieces.

One doll is a singer and fashion designer.

“It has its own Instagram account.

“The plan is to have a YouTube channel which will have a doll series.

“These days kids use cellphones and tablets, so it will be easy to access the series.”

She said playing with dolls could help kids spend less time on the internet.

Her dolls are available on the internet, but she said she hoped to open a shop soon.

She charges R350 for a doll.
