MOST people view a church as a place for decent people who don’t sin.

For this reason, suspects linked to the murder of Inkosi Hlanganani Biyela (54) thought an empty church would be a good place to hide from cops.

But they were wrong. When they saw the police approaching the church, they opened fire!

A gunfight started, leaving one suspect dead and two arrested. A short gun, believed to have been used in the murder, was found next to the dead suspect.

Biyela was shot and killed at home in Ndlangubo in Eshowe, northern KZN, on 13 November, by four men while he was opening his rondavel.

Ubumbano lweziNduna organisation chairman Charles Malinga welcomed the arrests.

“For a very long time, we have been complaining about no progress in the murder cases of traditional leaders.

“We are currently sitting with more than 40 murder cases and no progress. Seeing progress in this one gives us hope,” he said.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said a team of detectives were sent to Matshana in Ngwelezane to search for the suspects.

“Information led police to a church where the suspects were hiding. Upon arrival, they were met by a hail of bullets,” she said, adding that a suspect, believed to have been in his 30s, was killed.

“Two other suspects, aged 25 and 30, were found in possession of two pistols with 16 rounds of ammunition in each firearm,” she said.

The suspects appeared in the Ngwelezane Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 1 February, on a charge of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The bail application was set for 9 February.
