The topic of what language children should learn in is often a contentious one, especially in South Africa since we have eleven official languages.

While some parents insist that their children be taught in their native languages, others want their children to learn in English, the most common medium of instruction.

Those against having their kids learn in English, argue that this leads to their children eventually losing touch with their own roots and end up not being able to speak their own native languages fluently.

Those who insist that their kids be taught in English, argue that the world has advanced to a point where one has to be fluent in English to succeed anywhere.
