AFTER years of wishing for acknowledgement from the South African Music Awards (SAMAs), Makhadzi has finally earned a nomination.

In past years, the Ghanama singer has called out the awards for not nominating her. She has now bagged three nominations for Sampra Artist of the Year, Music Video of the Year for Ghanama featuring Prince Benza and Best Collaboration for Zwivhuya featuring Jon Delinger.

The nominees for the 28th awards ceremony were announced at The Garden Venue in Northriding, Joburg, on Tuesday, 7 June.

Speaking on behalf of Makhadzi, who did not attend, Brenden Maseko of Open Mic Productions said they were very happy.

“It’s a big achievement for her to be recognised, especially because the SAMAs are a big local brand, and for her to be part of it is a big deal,” he said.

Brenden said Makhadzi was no longer upset about not being nominated previously.

“She’s over that. We understand these things involve a lot of processes and it may not go as an artist wishes. This is now old news,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zakes Bantwini bagged seven nominations, including Album of the Year, Male Artist of the Year and Best Dance Album.

Recording Industry of South Africa CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi congratulated the nominees.

“A job well done to all #SAMA28 nominees. Each artist has laboured to ensure that they produce exceptional bodies of work, which have soothed and united us during particularly challenging times,” he said.

“The standard of this year’s submissions was impressive and presented a tough task for our panel of judges. We wish all nominees good luck and look forward to celebrating them at our event.”
