The South African Music Awards (Samas) nomination list was announced earlier this month, and there’s already drama brewing.
This after there was confusion about how some of the artists got nominated in some categories.
One category that raised eyebrows was the Record of the Year, in which Swaziland musician Sands is also nominated for his hit single Tigi, which dominated the airwaves early last year.
According to sources, it’s the first time someone who is not from Mzansi gets to be nomination in the Record of the Year category.
“We don’t understand how he got to be nominated. Yes, his song was big, but he has already bagged a few, if not many awards in Swaziland.
“The rules for the Samas simply state that only music that is produced in South Africa can enter for Record of the Year.
“That is not the case with Sands, he made his music in Swaziland and only came here to promote the album,” said the source.
Another source said it would have been understandable if the song was made in Mzansi, then it would have qualified to be nominated.
“No one at the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) explained this and we’re getting close to the awards.
"What if he wins? He’ll be robbing an artist from Mzansi, who has worked hard to make their song a success.
“He won at the MTN Swaziland Music Awards, which are equivalent to the Samas,” said one source.
Sands and Mobi Dixon were disqualified from the Samas.
Yesterday, RiSA and the Samas issued a statement disqualifying Sands, together with singer Mobi Dixon.
The statement reads, in part: “Tigi by Sands, which was nominated in the Record of the Year category and Lake by the Ocean by Mobi Dixon, which was up for Best Remix, have been struck off the nominees list.
“Sands is a citizen of eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) and as such is excluded from being considered for a Sama in the Record of the Year category.
"Mobi Dixon’s Lake by the Ocean is a remix of an international song, which is in contravention of the Sama rules.
“Tigi by Sands has been replaced by Love Me In The Dark by Sketchy Bongo, featuring Kaien Cruz.
“Voting line is *120*2003*21#.
“In the place of Lake by the Ocean by Mobi Dixon is Mwanagu by Jackie Queens and VeneiGrette remixed by Enoo Napa.
“RiSA is currently doing investigations into how these breaches were not picked up during the vetting process.
“After the investigation has been completed, appropriate remedial action will be taken.”
Both Sands and Mobi Dixon were not available for comment.
