Evolution, that's the word often associated with German automakers design.
And that's the case with the all-new Volkswagen Touareg.
The car is literally all-new but you wouldn't guess it looking at its exterior design.
New things in the car's exterior design include new IQ Light LED Matrix headlights that now blend in with the grille.
There's a new, bold character line that runs across the side of the car. They inverted the rear lights, the now slant upward and out. It's a handsome design, it looks a like a grown-up Tiguan.
The big news with the Touareg is hidden underneath the skin. VW's flagship SUV is more than 100-kg lighter than its predecessor. This is thanks to the MLB Evo architecture used in this car.
It is the same platform used by Lamborghini in their Urus,
Porsche in their Cayenne and Bentley in their Bentayga. So the car has really
base to start with. The car is longer and wider than its predecessor.
Cargo space is up from 697 to 810-litres; rear passengers also get more space to wiggle their feet.
The interior is all 2018 VW. The trusted knob has made way for haptic feedback.
The Innovation Cockpit is a combination of the 12-inch digital instrument cluster and the huge 15-inch infotainment system.
The screens are joined together seamlessly to create "a
digital operating, information, communication and entertainment unit that
hardly needs any conventional buttons or switches." Good luck with trying
to change the temperature without looking down.
The Touareg is filled with new technology like Night Vision assistance system which detects people and animals in darkness via a thermal imaging camera.
Hopefully, it does a better job than Uber's self-driving cars.
The Toureg launches with a range of V6 engines options; there's a turbodiesel that comes in two power outputs, 170-kW and 210-kW. There's a petrol V6 that offers up 250-kW.
The flagship VW SUV is expected to launch in South Africa in the third quarter of the year.
