USED CARS THAT LAST!

Volkswagen dominated five of the 11 Gumtree Pre-Owned Vehicle Awards this year – a move up from winning three last year.

The competition was limited to 2016 models with at least six months of depreciation or price-loss data. Two-year old vehicles are the most popular choice in the used vehicle market.

The awards recognise and promote the best pre-owned models in the market across 11 categories, based on what buyers need from pre-owned cars as well as depreciation and sales figures, which were provided by TransUnion.

The important buyer considerations are: resale value, quality, durability, overall performance and economy as well as value for money.

The winners were selected from a list of 55 finalists which were made up of the five vehicles.

The five which had lost the least off their price tags were represented in the 11 categories.

These models then underwent further evaluation, including physical road testing.

This year, a new category was added. It was for SUVs costing less than R505 000. It replaced the previous sports car category.

SunWheels was honoured to be one of the judges this year. It was interesting to note that three of the 2018 winners were the same models that walked away with the laurels last year: the Volkswagen Golf 1,4TSI Trendline, Volkswagen Golf R and the Mazda CX3 2,0 Individual.

Jeff Osborne, head of automotive at Gumtree, said: “The awards recognise the brands and models which best hold their value, while delivering reliable performance with reasonable operating costs.”
