AT LEAST 45 cars are stolen in the country every day!

And tsotsis know exactly which cars they are looking for.

Tracker SA released vehicle crime statistics yesterday, which indicated when and where vehicle crime was most likely to happen. The figures indicated a rise of 29% in hostage incidences during hijackings.

Statistics showed that thugs were hard at work on Fridays between 11am and 1pm, and at about 8pm until 11pm.

Gauteng, KZN and Western Cape were the most affected.

In Gauteng, areas with the highest car theft are Kensington, Arcadia and Eldorado Park as well as Pretoria CBD, Arcadia and Sunnyside with the most activations for theft.

In KZN, hijackings mainly happened in Sydenham, Imbali and Avoca Hills, while hijackings happened in Maitland and there was theft in Philippi, Claremont and Dunoon in Western Cape.

According to My Car Tracking, VW Polos still remained the most hijacked vehicles followed by Toyota and Ford.

Tracker SA executive operational services Ron Knott-Craig said many motorists regularly drove without paying any attention to their surroundings.

“Criminals recognise and take advantage of this complacency,” said Knott-Craig.

“To avoid being an easy target, we need to stay alert and be vigilant. Don’t believe it could never happen to you.”
