His uncle loved Toyotas with a passion so Vuyo keeps the undying love alive.
Vuyo Duma (33) from Simunye near Westonaria, west of Joburg, said: “I have an powerful emotional response when I drive my 1986 1,6 Corolla – it fills me with many memories.”
Q: When did you buy it?
A: In May.
Q: Isn’t that too recent to be a measure of undying love?
A: No way. I owned six other Toyotas before this one.
Q: Why do you love them?
They are reliable, light on petrol, affordable and bring back many cheerful memories.
Q: What features do you love?
A: The interior is standard and comfortable but its exterior is eye-catching because I clean it every day.
Q: What have you named it?
A: I call the car Mr Duma because it’s part of my family.
Q: Did you change anything?
A: I put in a sound system, got the seats washed by a valet service and it had a major service.
Q: Do you like the colour?
A: I love the colour although silver is my favourite. The maroon paint is what made me notice this car. I fell in love with this car because of its colour.
Q: How far have you travelled?
A: I have driven to townships in the North West.
Q: How many fines do you have?
A: I once got a fine for speeding. I do regret that I violated the law. I have avoided it ever since.
Q: Would you allow any anyone to drive it?
A: No one else for now.
Q: What do you think of other drivers on the roads?
A: Inexperienced drivers make mistakes because they don’t yet know the details of driving and panic easily. Experienced drivers get impatient and cause accidents by driving aggressively. I wish all road users were patient and humble towards each other all the time.
