IT’S going to be marvellous to be able watch six races in one day.
On Saturday, 2 March, Dunlop and Falken Tyres co-host the Extreme Festival, at Dezzi Raceway in KZN.
Sponsored by Sumitomo Rubber South Africa – the company behind the co-hosts – it is a festival packed with six races taking place on the day.
Riaz Haffejee, Sumitomo CEO, said the Falken Polo Cup circuit race is raced by modified VW Polos. The Global Touring Car series is a circuit race featuring 2,0-litre turbo-powered cars. The other races are the Global Touring Car 2, SA Superbikes, the Supersport 600 and the Investchem 1600, a premier single-seater race.
“This is the first time that the national The Global Touring Car series will take place at the south coast circuit
“We are excited to bring back racing of this calibre to KZN!”
The event features a string of firsts. It is the first stop in the 2019 national tour for all disciplines and it’s the first time that a national bike series competes next to a national car series on the same day. The track itself is also new.
“We’ve made the track wider and smoother for improved side-by-side racing,” said track owner Desmond Gutzeit.
Tony Taylor, Extreme Festival organiser, said: “No one has raced the Global Touring Cars on the updated circuit.
The Falken Polo Cup features identical cars – all are exact copies of each other right down to each individual screw and the drops of fuel in the tank – built by VW and racing against each other.
“It is one of the most exciting races in the country because it’s all about the driver’s skill,” said Riaz.
He said this year’s Falken Polo Cup contenders include reigning champion Jeffry Kruger and local South Coast competitor, Clinton Bezuidenhout.
Children under 12 years get in for free while adults need to pay R80 each at the door. Doors open at 8am and close at 5pm on the day.
