SINCE Toyota released pictures of the new Quantum in February, Mzansi has been eagerly waiting for the new transporter for the masses to arrive.

The Japanese automaker says the new Quantum guarantees practicality, comfort levels with reinvented power delivery and a bigger turbodiesel engine.

The biggest feature on the new Quantum is the ‘cab-over’ to ‘semi-bonnet’ design.

Its new design provides for a more spacious interior and modernised look with enhanced aerodynamics, while the more stylish revision has increased the overall length and passenger space.

Meanwhile the new front design includes a united radiator grille and headlamps and the GL Bus models receive chrome treatment to the grille as well as vertical LED Daytime Running Lights, fog lamps and colour-coded bumpers.

While the looks of the Quantum are good, the local taxi industry will be more interested in the safety, performance and savings on fuel.

The suspension and its outlying parts of the undercarriage have been renewed, and the engine relocated in a semi-bonnet configuration, this will help provide a powerful, stable and quiet ride, for sustained comfort even on long commutes.

The outgoing Quantum Ses’fikile employed the 2.7-litre petrol and 2.5-litre turbodiesel powertrain, but the Quantum will utilise a 2.8-litre engine which adopts a turbocharger with an intercooler.

It will help in producing a powerful dynamic performance while enhancing fuel economy and quietness.

The four-cylinder, 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine delivers maximum power of 130 kW @ 3400 r/min and peak torque of 420 Nm @ 1400 - 2600 r/min.

The Japanese automaker has also decided to continue the production of the outgoing Qunatum and rename the HIACE SES’FIKILE.

The Hiace name is well known and trusted in South Africa, and pays homage to the iconic ‘Siyaya’ commuter busses of the 90’s.

The Hiace Ses’fikile will retain the 2.7 litre petrol and 2.5 diesel engine and drivetrain.
