EVEN simple cars like Avanza need to keep innovating and improving so they can look attractive to buyers.

And, Toyota has done so by dropping the production of Avanza and replacing it with the new people mover called Toyota Rumion.

Launching it in Joburg this week, the brand said more space meant more fun in the Rumion.

The brand was looking forward to attracting small families from 36 to 45 years old taking ownership of the car, together with those who liked to travel in groups as friends and social groups.

This car is the third to come out of Toyota’s interesting partnership with Maruti Suzuki in India following the Baleno and Brezza.

While everything does look and feel like the Ertiga, it is important to note that the grille of the Rumion appears sharper and more beautifully integrated with the headlights.

All models of the Rumion, S, SX and top-spec TX come fitted with Toyota Connect and on-board Wi-Fi.

The interior looks intact in black with touches of horizontal faux wood through the bottom of the steering wheel.

The car is quite spacious, which is something the brand prides itself in compared to the previous Avanza and other competitors.

The touch-screen infotainment system in the TX can be linked to smart devices through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Toyota decided to keep the engine at 1.5L four-cylinder petrol paired with a five-speed manual or four-speed auto transmission. This all because research showed that it was the most efficient and customers liked it.

The power outputs is at 77kW and torque of 138Nm, which all work to the satisfaction of the driver.

Having driven it around after the launch, the Rumion will be a winner with fuel efficiency of just under 6L/100km of travel as well as the leg and head-room inside.

It is also well-priced, given the benefits that come with it for both rentals and families looking to have a proper people mover in their homes.
