NOT until you jump into the Golf R will you understand people’s obsession with this car.

SunWheels tried a Lapiz Blue Metallic and was captivated by its roar.

There are a couple of things that will make the R the apple of your eye.

The optional R Performance Titanium exhaust and R Performance brakes are some of the bells and whistles that make a huge difference to its exterior design.

It comes standard with R design bumpers, LED headlights and LED tail lights, which all put together, give it that look-at-me effect.

Even if you pretend you can’t see its beauty, trust me, you will turn and look.

The fact that Volkswagen allowed people to choose from a number of 19-inch wheel options, above the standard “Spielberg” 19-inch alloy, is something worth noting.

Its beautifully designed standard panoramic roof is eye-catching too.

This allows you to let in more breeze as you zoom in and out of town.

The interior is heavenly. Some features come standard and work together to offer you comfort. This includes the Nappa-carbon leather seats, mobile phone interface comfort with charging function, a powerful DynAudio sound system and a lot more.

But the power output increase from 213kW to 228kW is what you will feel on take-off.

The Gold R is the most powerful Golf in Mzansi and expect to see its owners show it off on our roads.

This car is a wonder and what adds to that amazing power is the sound it releases upon acceleration as it automatically shifts gears.

It handles very well. And yes, if you ever had doubts that power goes to the head, hop in and feel if it for yourself.

Safety in the 7th generation Golf R is a top priority, boasting the optional blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with front assist and autonomous emergency braking system, and the R performance titanium exhaust.

The question I kept asking myself was: why do I need cruise control when this car’s auto-drive does the job?

The answer is: cruise control will keep you within the speed limit and in check because you are likely to go overboard in this marvel of a car.
