HYUNDAI is beefing up its i20 with the new range-topping Active.
When the facelifted i20 range arrives here in the coming weeks it will be spearheaded by the rugged Active model.
The Active features the same design treatment as VW’s CrossPolo, which means that it has SUV design cues to give the hatchback a crossover flair. Its ride height is 20mm higher than the normal i20, which lets drivers cope better with lowlight off-road conditions.
It looks different from the standard i20 hatchback because of its restyled bumpers, black side cladding and door mouldings and satin chrome roof rails.
To set its cabin apart from other i20 versions, the Active will probably get a two-tone interior scheme or perhaps some sporty contrast stitching.
On the safety front, there are dual front airbags with a passenger de-activation function, ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution plus a crash-sensing door unlock function.
Though there isn’t an indication yet which engine will feature in the i20 Active, SunWheels expects it to be Hyundai’s 1,4-litre naturally aspirated unit with a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.
Hyundai South Africa will introduce the updated i20 range here near the end of May. There are dramatic design changes to an already impressive hatchback to give it the necessary power to stay relevant in its very competitive market where its most significant rival is the new VW Polo.
Though pricing information will only become available at launch the i20 will probably again come standard with Hyundai’s acclaimed five-year/150 000km manufacturer’s warranty with an additional two-year/50 000km engine warranty.
