MERCEDES-BENZ has kicked its popular A-Class to the curb!

For the first time a sedan version has been added to the A-Class line-up, consisting of the hatchback and four-door CLA coupé.

And the newcomer is a stunner and destined to steal sales from its ageing C-class sibling.

Merc’s new compact sedan will rival the Audi A3 sedan and attract as much attention as the A-Class hatchback, which is Mzansi’s Car of the Year.

Its sporty design combined with compact dimensions will make the A-Class sedan a hit.

As with other Merc models, buyers can individualise their A-Class sedan. They can choose between a few trim levels and a range of alloy wheel designs.

The A-Class sedan is 4 549mm long and 1 796 mm wide with a decent boot capacity of 420 litres, which is 45 litres more than the hatchback.

According to Mercedes, the boot opening is large. It has a width of 950mm and a diagonal of 462mm between lock and lower edge of the rear window, allowing loading and unloading of larger luggage items.

There are two turbopetrol engine options. The A200 has the familiar 1,33L unit and produces 120kW and 250Nm.

The A250 boasts a 2L powertrain with outputs of 165kW and 350Nm. Both models send power to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Like the other models in the A-Class and new B-Class line-ups, this newcomer gets a high-tech cockpit with a digital instrument display.

Pricing starts at R533 499 for the A200 sedan.
