MOTORCYCLING AND SAFETY TIPS

Bikers are the most vulnerable road users. There’s nothing surrounding them and they don’t have seatbelts. A crash that would annoy a driver can gravely damage or kill a rider, which is why Arrive Alive offers some advice.

Stay out of trucks’ no go zones

Never hang out in a truck’s blind spot or no-go zone. Trucks have large no go zones on both sides, at the front and behind. Drivers can’t see you when you are in the zone. These are places where bikers die.

Always wear a decent helmet

Many helmets are poor quality. They look pretty but will protect your head as well as a plastic bucket. Always make sure all helmets you buy are tested according to recognised safety standards.

The road wants to kill you

Ride as if other road users are blind or actively want to kill you. Your safety gear and helmet do not protect you, they can only absorb the worst of the worst of a collision – your body takes the rest of the damage.

Be extra cautious, don’t straddle lanes, don’t sweep other vehicles, keep to the speed limit and know that you are invisible to all other drivers.
