GAUTENG Premier David Makhura inspected two automobile plants to check whether they were complying with Covid-19 regulations.

Makhura evaluated the BMW and Nissan manufacturing plants in Rosslyn, Tshwane on Wednesday.

The Premier said he was satisfied with the level 4 compliance.

He said the visit was also part of the executive council's weekly outreaches on Covid-19 health and safety assessments.

He said they were focusing on locomotive the industry to determine if they are complying with regulations.

"It's important that all businesses and workers are protected with health standards. We want to make sure there is screening and testing as workers and management arrive at work,” he said.

He said they were also subjected to good screening.

Makhura said BMW operates with a clinic that helps in health compliance and it assists workers if they are not feeling well.

"It's all about saving lives of workers as they should in good health," he said.

The Premier said those who are talking about the opening of the economy should be ready to comply in the coming level and that there must be social distancing.

"All businesses in Gauteng should comply, we can't go to level 3 reckless not making sure that all places have safety measures in place.

"We need to be ready for level 3 and not put the lives of the workers in danger and businesses which are not complying will be closed and there will be no mercy,” he said.

Makhura said they want the businesses to open but under strict supervision and in a cautious manner.

"We are ready to go to court in protecting our workers.

“We know as a country the worse is still to come but we should be prepared. We don't need to put the lives of anyone in danger, all people should comply.

“We are working with BMW, Nissan, Germany, and Japan in doing the field hospital and we are finalising the details,” Makhura added.

Makhura said the field hospital will also help the community of Soshanguve.

He added that it will also help BMW as they have 5 000 workers and Nissan also has a lot of workers.

Makhura said he was impressed by the assessment in the manufacturing plant.

He was accompanied by MEC of Health Bandile Masuku and Economic Development Morakane Mosupyoe.

The plant officials toured with Makhura when he was assessing the places.
