LAST week, we got more than we had expected at the launch of the new Datsun Go.
Those who thought the Datsun Go would not survive the market, based on the uncertain first model that came out a few years ago, should change their minds. Aimed at the new buyers, the new Go is a departure from the first model, which seemed like it would break into pieces if it were to hit the wind at any speed.
Not only is the new Go balanced and stable on the road, it has the speed.
With its distinctive body shape, headlights and impressive arches, its design reflects its character – a car that’s built for the city.
On the go in the Go
The launch had motoring journalists drive from Lanseria to Maponya Mall, Soweto, and then to Pretoria. And this is where the SunWheels team discovered how the Go gets you to where you need to hustle without all the hassle – it was a fun ride until we hit traffic on the M1 caused by construction work.
We were stuck in traffic for more than 30 minutes on a really hectic day.
We also loved the looks the new Go boasts – from its D-cut grille with chrome lining. Without doubt, the little car has character.
The headlight design looks like big, sharp eyes which form part of the model’s signature look.
The headlights feature a multi-faceted interior reflector, framed by
a metallic accent to provide the Go its premium and stylish look.
The daytime running LED lamps not only give the Go its cute but sharp look from the front but also keeps you visible wherever you are on the road.
It gets its attitude from its athletic rear shoulders, but the drive appeal comes from its uncluttered but cosy cabin.
Where are the brains in this beauty?
The 1,2-litre engine was surprisingly powerful and really changed the team’s driving experience.
From take-off, the precision steering and responsive acceleration made us forget that we were in a Go.
Time to bust all the myths you heard about the previous version and approach this one with logic.
This car is definitely here to stay!
There is also a lot of joy coming from its advanced suspension system which allowed us to enjoy a smooth ride.
A surprise in the shower
Stuck in a sudden storm, this little car is able to handle the wet, treacherous roads.
It did so effortlessly, thanks to the Japanese technology managing the suspension.
We had little trouble finding the ideal wiper intervals for wet weather driving – it’s easy and conveniently automatic.
The car’s smart wiper system adjusts wiper frequency according to your car’s speed on the road.
The Go is available in white, silver, grey, orange and red colour schemes.
