Arrive Alive
MANY people around Mzansi will be going on holiday and many more going to different annual Easter pilgrimages.
The migration patterns across different provinces will cause heavy traffic on the roads.
Below are several ways to keep safe on the roads this Easter weekend.
Following Distances and Heavy Traffic
- According to Arrive Alive, during heavy traffic, motorists should keep a safe distance [buffer zone] from other vehicles and give themselves plenty response time by slowing your speed.
- Keep a safe following distance of 3 seconds, which would in most circumstances be a safe following distance.
- If you maintain a safe following distance you’ll have time to react to sudden braking by the cars ahead of you or any erratic driving you might encounter.
Remain Calm/Avoiding the Rage in Heavily Congested Traffic
- When you encounter heavy traffic you need to drive with a very calm and relaxed attitude - do not get agitated with the congested traffic - keep in mind that you and your vehicle contributes to the congestion experienced by all.
- It is best not to drive while tired or emotionally agitated.
Overtaking and Blind Spots
- Many horrific crashes in heavy traffic are head-on collisions caused by impatient drivers recklessly and unsafely overtaking.
- Before you overtake always consider - Is it legal? Is it safe? Is it necessary?
- Try to avoid dangerously overtaking multiple vehicles.
- Never assume that there will be a safe space for you to re-enter traffic once you have overtaken another vehicle [truck].
