BMW has lifted the covers off the all-new X3 and X4 M models ahead of their official reveal at the Geneva International Motor Show in March.
BMW says that the new models set the benchmarks for dynamic excellence, agility and precision in their respective classes. Wonder what Porsche has to say about that!?!
Unlike other M models, we don’t have to wait months to get Competition variants for the X3M and X4M because BMW M has already showcased the more powerful versions.
The “normal” X3 M and X4 M will make 353 kW and 600 Nm peak torque from an inline six 3.0-litre Biturbo engine.
Whilst the Competition models will have the most powerful straight-six petrol engine ever to see action in a BMW M.
Kicking out 375 kW and the same peak torque as the normal M models, makes it more powerful than the engine in the hard-core M4 GTS, 51 kW more than the Porsche Macan Turbo with Performance Package.
Both the normal M models and the Competition variants use an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.
It sends power to all four wheels using BMW M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which made its debut in the BMW M5.
Unlike in the M5, tyre shredding drift mode is not an option. The system is rear-biased only sending power to the rear wheels when necessary.
The system helps the normal X3 and X4 M models do the 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds, the Competition models are only one-tenth quicker.
To deliver that benchmark dynamic excellence, agility and precision BMW uses M-specific suspension’s electronically controlled dampers to hunker down to the road has it barrels down to a top speed of 250 km/h.
The limiter can be on both the normal and Competition models so that the normal cars will hit 280km/h and the Comps will do an extra 5km/h.
The dampers offer three settings and they keep the wheels and body in control using bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics and double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle
Like with all M cars the new X3M and X4 M feature M design elements on the exterior and interior.
Bigger front air-inlets and redesigned side air-breathers are some of the few elements that show that you got the baddest M. The quad-exhausts at the back show whoever will be following that you ain't to be messed with.
Inside you get the special M-steering wheel with two red M buttons. The M-gear selector as seen in the M5 and few other sporty options.
The Competition models get gloss black options on the grille and air-breathers just like in the M5 too.
