TUMELO Singo says that being a rider comes with many responsibilities.
“You have to be cautious as well as make yourself visible on the road.
“Riding is fun and people shouldn’t be afraid of bikes,” said the smart dresser from Diepkloof, Soweto.
Q: What bike do you ride?
A: It’s a Harley Davidson 883 Sportster XL.
Q: When did you buy it?
A: April. He is my first bike.
Q: Does he have a pet name?
A: Yes, I call him Baby. He is very gentle and easy to ride.
Q: When did you start biking?
A: When I bought the bike last year, I had lessons at Soweto Motorbike School a month before I started riding.
Nobody introduced me to biking, I just fell in love with bikes and the first thing I did was to take bike lessons.
Q: Can you tell us about your first ride?
A: It was scary! But I pushed and pushed, and here I am, the best rider ever.
Q: Why did you choose Baby?
A: Baby is beautiful. He is even bigger than he looks in the pictures and is loud. He has power and is intimidating. I love my Baby!
Q: How often do you ride?
A: Almost daily.
Q: Where have you ridden?
A: I have not had too many long distance trips – the furthest was to Rustenburg.
The bike is still new and hopefully by the end of this year we will travel long distance somewhere.
Q: Tell us about your outfit?
A: I have a helmet, gloves and boots of the highest safety standards that I use on long and short trips.
The outfit is expensive but very important. If you want to ride, buy one. Never ride without protection – never! Put your safety first.
Q: What colour is Baby?
A: He’s matt black because black is beautiful as they always say!
Q: Have you customised your bike?
A: No, Baby is fine. I cannot think of anything I want to change right now.
Maybe as time goes on, I will think of something I wish to add to my love.
Q: How often do you get fines?
A: I don’t get fines because I don’t to show off. Respect the rules of the road and you will arrive home safe.
Q: Do you belong to a club?
A: Not yet. I still enjoy riding alone. We need more women riders in Mzansi! Maybe in the future I will join a bike club.
