BY NJABULO NGCOBO WE speak to petrolhead Vuyi Mpofu who’s a road safety advocate.
Not only is she well-versed in motoring, she’s also passionate about trucks and motorbikes.
Her love of cars began when she played spanner girl to her father.
“Due to the prohibitions of the country at the time, I pursued a career in marketing instead.
“But I wasn’t content in an office environment, so I followed my motoring passion and launched Driving In Heels in 2010.”
Over the years, Vuyi developed other interactive motoring lifestyle brands, namely Gals Garage, Fantastic Fathers and Biking in Heels.
Her success is measured by her achievements in the motoring sector, including being a familiar face on Buyer’s Guide and Ignition GT.
She was also the motoring contributor for Bona magazine.
Vuyi is a member of the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists, a non-executive board member of the Retail Motor Industry and a Juror on the Car of the Year competition.
She’s successfully mentored and guided the path of the first black female motorcycle journalist – Bongiwe Didiza, who rides and reviews motorcycles.
Continuing in the same vein of getting more women and men smarter, she’s launched a lifelong dream – Heels and Horsepower.
The digital motoring magazine aims to appeal to all ages about the nuances of car ownership and safe driving.
The portal addresses issues not commonly spoken about, ranging from interviews with people who’ve had to adjust their lives after surviving horrific car crashes, to everyday motoring advice for women, as well as men who’re honest enough to admit they don’t know much about cars.
