IT IS game on in the bakkie segment with the launch of Mitsubishi’s new muscular-styled Triton. It makes its local debut less than six months after the world launch and is sure to keep the heads turning.

With the most daring bakkie design ever seen, the latest Triton is going to cause a stir in its segment where it is to square off against the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara and Volkswagen Amarok.

According to Mitsubishi the new tough-looking Triton also features a host of enhancements and refinements making it even more durable and reliable. There is only one engine option available, as well as a single trim level but buyers can choose between 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrains and manual or automatic transmissions.

Apart from its new appearance there is also a new six-speed automatic transmission an enhanced 4x4 system that delivers improved off-road performance, and the latest in active safety and driver assistance systems.

The most striking new exterior feature of the Triton is at the front where the new face incorporates Mitsubishi’s new-generation “Dynamic Shield” front styling. The high hood line and beefier-looking headlights located higher up give the new model a more powerful and imposing look.

Of course the interior is fresh too and is more luxurious and comfortable than the outgoing model. A high-quality look is created by soft pad materials and stitching on the floor console, armrests and parking brake.

All models come with features such as leather seats, a touch-screen multimedia system with Bluetooth, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, seven airbags and a rear view camera.

The Triton is powered by Mitsubishi’s powerful tried and tested 2,4-litre turbodiesel with 133 kW of power on tap, while torque is a whopping 430 Nm at 2 500 /rmin.

Replacing the previous five-speed automatic, the new six-speed automatic transmission allows smoother, more powerful acceleration and improved refinement.

The new Triton is covered by a warrant of three-years or 100 000km and a five-year / 90 000 km service plan.
