The world’s leading germ-protection soap will deliver hygiene education and hot showers to the water-scarce community of Khayelitsha.

For many Capetonians the recent draught was a major wake-up call, teaching them the true value of water as Level 6 water restrictions forced them to use just 25 litres of water per household daily for cooking, bathing and cleaning, but for many South African communities, like Khayelitsha, these restrictive conditions are an everyday reality.

It’s estimated that 37% of households in South Africa have a limited water supply.

In Khayelitsha, where a significant portion of the Cape Town’s residents live, reports indicate that many residents continue to live with the equivalent of Level 6 water restrictions, with around 20 litres per day for a whole family.

“What became clear during the drought was that, in a water scarce environment, personal hygiene is easily neglected and disease-causing germs can spread all too quickly, particularly in densely populated areas such as Khayelitsha,” said Sphelele Mjadu, PR Lead for Unilever Africa Beauty & Personal Care, ‘The fact is that Hand-washing and bathing with germ-protection soap and clean water at key occasions is the best way for people to protect themselves from germs that can cause diseases like diarrhoea and pneumonia.

This is why we felt it pertinent to bring hygiene education to this community.”

As the world’s leading germ-protection soap, Lifebuoy is committed to hygiene education to prevent the spread of disease.

Since 2010 Lifebuoy has educated over 257 million people across 24 countries, including over 11 million South Africans, on hygienic handwashing to save lives.

Today, Lifebuoy’s hygienic handwashing lessons are being taught in 15 000 South African schools through the National Schools Hygiene and Sanitation Programme.

In keeping with this purpose, Lifebuoy will take its hygiene education programme directly to the community of Khayalitsha next week to raise awareness of the health risks associated with not washing your hands and body properly.

In the days leading up to the activation Lifebuoy will be handing out 50 000 soap samples with educational leaflets in the area and visiting two local schools per day to offer hygiene education.

On Thursday 27 September, the community activation will take place at Andile Msizi Hall in Khayelitsha and will include hand-washing stations where people can learn the correct method and occasions of hand-washing as well as hot showers for the community to enjoy a hygienic wash with Lifebuoy soap.

Showers will be provided using a ticketing system starting at 6am and ending at 4pm, using water sourced from a nearby Aquifier in Woodstock.

Each person who enjoys a shower will be required to take part in a hygiene education demonstration and will receive a Lifebuoy sample and leaflet to share this knowledge with their family.

At the same time, Lifebuoy will use this opportunity to educate the community on how best to conserve grey water hygienically and all grey water from the activation will be repurposed for use at St. Kizito community food garden 3km away.

For every person reached with hygiene education through these activities, it’s estimated that a further four people are educated by association and in this way, Lifebuoy aims to reach over 200 000 people in the region next week.

Earlier this week, actor, presenter and media personality Moshe Ndiki caused a stir when he volunteered to go five days without a shower. He pledged his support in solidarity of those communities that lack access to water and sanitation after seeing facts, which Lifebuoy shared on social media.

“I was shocked and saddened to hear that so few people in South Africa have access to clean water for hygienic washing. It got me thinking about how I would feel or react in that situation,” said Ndiki.

“How do we teach and raise awareness of the importance of hygiene when people have little water? Some kids in rural areas can’t even make it to school because of illnesses relating to hygiene.”
