ACCORDING to the braaiculture.com website, the word braai can take on many forms, such as describing a social meeting, the physical apparatus (noun) in which you cook your meat, or the process (verb) of cooking the meat over an open flame.

This form of cooking is celebrated hugely in Mzansi.

Every family has their own style, recipes and how they choose to braai.

In Mzansi, braai’ing evolved from the word braden (roast in Dutch), into braaivleis (which is Afrikaans for grilled meat) and then into the verb braai, which means “to grill”.

The exact history of the word is hard to trace though because Dutch was rapidly evolving into new sister language known as Afrikaans in the 18th century.

Other cultures also have their form of the braai.

In the US they call it barbecuing and it has the same effect as a braai.

Next month, the celebrity MasterChef South Africa judge, Pete Goffe-Wood will be hosting a master class on the art of making a Mzansi braai.

This exclusive Chef’s Table event will be held at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott Cape Town on 11 May.

It forms part of the international hotel giant’s way of celebrating their newly unveiled travel programme called Marriott Bonvoy.

Neal Jones, sales and marketing officer for the Middle East and Africa, Marriott International, said they are excited to bring these very special experiences to fuel the passions of Mzansi people.

He hopes that these create memorable moments that will win continued loyalty.

This programme currently features two exclusive experiences that throw a spotlight on our country and provides a distinctive point of view on the destination.

Swing for a cause at the Marriott Bonvoy Golf Day is powered by Reach For A Dream Foundation.

Marriott Bonvoy members have a chance to bid their points for a round of golf at the award-winning 18-hole, Par 72 Championship golf course at African Pride Arabella Hotel & Spa, Autograph Collection in Kleinmond.

The event, to be held on 10 May, includes a one-night stay at the stunning resort, a round of golf on the pristine fairways and putting greens, live entertainment and food and beverages throughout the day.
