THE FACTS

Chimelwane Letta from Diepkloof in Soweto said after she was retrenched from work she applied for her UIF from the company and all her previous employers.

The last company she worked for had refused to sign the U19 form because they didn’t register their employees and an inspector was sent to the employer. The employer was ordered to pay all the money.

She was advised she would receive payment in March. She contacted the UIF and was advised to make an appeal since there was a delay in her application. However, she was not told the outcome.

WHAT I DID

I asked the department of labour about the outcome of the appeal.

SOLUTION

Thabang Mahlangu from the UIF said a claim benefits application was submitted on 3 March. The claim was assessed and approved for 172 credit days, about five and a half months worth of payments, as the claim took long to be approved. Chimelwane finally signed for payment and it was eventually made by the Joburg Labour Centre.
