THE FACTS

Lesego Monama from Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, said she was in a relationship with a married man for three years.

When she fell pregnant the man wanted nothing to do with her.

Lesego said that taking care of the child while she was working wasn’t a problem.

But now she has lost her job and wants to know if she can claim maintenance.

ADVICE

It’s a legal obligation of both biological parents to pay child maintenance. By law, every child has the right to receive maintenance from their parents, irrespective of whether the father is married or not. Lesego can approach her nearest maintenance court to claim for her child.
