WINTER HOME ENERGY SAVERS

MAY is Energy Month and even when it’s over, we can still use its energy-saving message during winter.

Matthys Potgieter, debt expert at DebtSafe, said small daily changes will cut your energy bill and improve your household’s wellbeing.

Saving kitchen energy

- Home cooked or baked meals are the way to go – and quantity is key. When you have the opportunity to prepare a few meals at the same time you use your stove or oven less.

- If your food prep time is limited, consider investing in an energy-saving appliance like an air fryer. You can use it to fry, grill, roast or bake your meals while cutting down on using your stove.

Keeping warm

- Wear layered outfits to keep the chill at bay.

- Don’t crank up the heater. Instead, close off unused rooms and keep the heat where you are.

S- tore hot water in hot water flasks to avoid overusing the kettle.

Avoid these appliances

- Overusing an appliance like the dishwasher, washing machine or tumble dryer is a definite no-no.

- Avoid using the tumble dryer. Dry the washing on a line.

- Keep the refrigerator door closed.

- Turn your geyser off when going away for a few days.

- Turn off all power outlets when not in use.

Because we use a lot more artificial lighting during winter, switch to low-energy LED bulbs. They use less power than filament bulbs.

DebtSafe is ready to help you implement these small but important cuts. If you need help with your spending, give them a call and their team will give you a free debt assessment.
