THEY are proud of their language and culture.
They are so unashamed and unapologetic about their heritage that they do everything in their power to show it off.
They call themselves Proud Xitsonga Social Club and are based in Winterveld, north of Tshwane.
Club chairwoman Nomsa Chauke said their club is a symbol of a proud people.
“People, regardless of their ethnicity, should be proud of their culture.
“That is why we do what we do to encourage everyone to follow suit and take pride in their culture.”
Proud Xitsonga was formed in 2013 and the club celebrated its fifth birthday over the weekend. The members danced for their audience with xibelani and music – it was a lot of fun.
The club has 10 members who meet on every Sunday where they contribute R50 or more. The money is deposited in the club account by its two appointed secretaries.
The two secretaries must show the bank statement which reflects the deposit at the next meeting before the club proceeds to the business of the day.
At the end of the year, the members get back what they saved over the 12 months.
Proud Xitsonga makes a passionate plea to parents: bring your children to our gatherings so they can learn their culture.
They believe that too many children are not learning about the beauty of Xitsonga culture. The culture must be kept alive or it will be lost to everyone.
