HOW MUCH do you know about your family tree?
Many families in Mzansi have broken up to live in different areas for work. However, there is a need for relatives to stay in touch and meet at various occasions such as weddings and funerals.
This the reason the Monaheng family in Tloonane, Hammanskraal has been running the Dinoko Social Club for the past few years now.
Member Morakane Monaheng told SunStokvel: “There are some relatives that I see only at weddings, funerals or tombstone reveals.
“But these days, communication has changed for the better, so we Monahengs decided to meet up every season and get to know each other better.
“There’s too much going on and too little time at formal events to catch up on news. But with the club, there’s lots of time for everyone to meet each other. The elders can meet youngsters while siblings and cousins can laugh about the old times,” she said.
Dinoko had its first meeting three years ago at Mathibestad in Hammanskraal.
In the following year, the family met in Ratjiepane, near Mabopane.
And this year, more than 50 relatives met again in Tloonane Village, Hammanskraal.
They relatives do focus on fun for the everyone at every meeting, so each member pays R100 to cover the cost of meals the host prepares.
While Dinoko doesn’t have a strict policy regarding saving for funerals, if a relative does die, club members contribute meat and other food while spending time helping the grieving family before and after the burial.
