TWO is better than one and many are even stronger.
This is true for Omakoti Abathe Ndlundlu stokvel group from Mfuleni, Cape Town.
The women-only stokvel group recently gathered in Bosasa to celebrate with member Sinekhaya Dano (35).
Sinekhaya couldn’t hold her happiness back when she was presented with a wardrobe, a two-door fridge and cash.
“It’s always great when it’s your turn to be given the items and it was my turn now.
“I am happy that I got a wardrobe and a fridge at the same time. I would not have been able to afford both if it was not for these women.”
Omakoti spokeswoman Nomonde Tongo (41) said since last December the stokvel has changed members’ lives.
“We help each other to buy needed items such as decent furniture for our houses.”
The stokvel is made up of 22 members, both newlyweds and long-term wives, who contribute R500 each every month.
The money means that two different members get gifts every month.
“This isn’t just an association where we buy each other things, we are also friends.
“In meetings we advise each other on how to keep our marriages healthy. We support each other during the good times and bad.”
Members had to wear their ixhakatho and visit one of their members after she lost her child in an accident.
“We are sisters so an injury to one is an injury to all. That is why we come together when one of us is grieving.”
