TOGETHER we can!
This motto unites the men and women of Siyabangena Burial Society.
Siyabangena was started when the villagers grew tired of the struggle to bury their loved ones with dignity.
Founder and chairwoman Connie Modisenyane (60), said the group started with 14 members in extension 12, Kagiso 2, near Krugersdorp, in 2003.
Connie said: “The same horrible problem plagued us whenever someone died.
“Relatives had to beg everyone for just enough money to afford the most basic funeral.
“I decided this was a poor way of organising money so I started Siyabangena Burial Society.”
Since it stared, the group has grown and Connie said they have bigger plans for the future of their burial group.
“Siyabangena now has 28 members who contribute R200 each every month.
“We pay R5 000 to the grieving family of a dead member but there is a three-month waiting period for new members.
“We also help with transport to and from the cemetery on the funeral day.
“Our society has brought many good changes that we love but we can do more. We want to grow and own rather than rent. We are saving to buy our own tents, chairs and other equipment needed at funerals.
“I am happy that Siyabangena is successful but we can do more,” she said.
