WHEN disaster strikes, it leaves a trail of destruction.
This is what faced members of the Days of Our Lives Women’s Club when it disbanded after being in existence for two decades.
It used to be one of the most respected clubs in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni. But members never gave up. They knew what they needed.
So, they formed what is now known as Never Give Up Women’s Club back in 2014.
Emmah Mashiane, secretary of the club, said: “The society was operating well. There were no signs of anything going wrong.
“It came as a surprise and shock to all of us when it suddenly collapsed.
“Whatever the reasons, we’re now working together and have formed this new society.”
She said while news of their former society left many members upset, hope was soon restored when Never Give Up was formed.
They meet every first Sunday of the month and contribute R100 each. The money goes into their savings account.
“If one of us, or one of a dependents dies, we pay an extra R50 each, in addition to the funeral payout.
“We’re not only about funerals. When members or relatives get married we also buy them gifts.
“We contribute a minimum of R50 each to buy a gift for the celebrant.
Joyce Mashigo is the brains behind Never Give Up Women’s Club.
Emmah explained: “Joyce told us we should never give up. She then called some of us aside and said we needed to carry on together because we needed something to unite us.
“The following month, we met and formed Never Give Up Club. The eight of us opened a new bank account.”
Emmah said although their savings are still small, once they have enough money in the kitty, the club intends recruiting two more people to make a total of 10 members.
