DO YOU know of any town, organisation or street that was named after an ordinary man?

Then that must mean that Thomas Ngobeni is an extraordinary man because he had a whole savings club and stokvel named after him: the Thomas Social Club!

Thomas told SunStokvel: “When I and some friends were together, we decided to form a club but little did I know that the club would be named after me.

“I am honoured to be associated with an organisation that I helped form. It gives me the sense of belonging which is why I do not think I will ever abandon this club.

“As members, our aim is to make sure we boost one another financially.

“We all meet every two weeks at a difference member’s place, and contribute a minimum of R600 each.”

Of the R600 contribution, R100 is paid to the meeting’s host. It pays for the costs of preparing food and drinks which are served on the day.

“It is important we all show discipline and come to the meetings on time – people who are without any good reason are fined an extra R20.

“If a member or members make such a noise that the others find disturbing or troublesome, that member or those members are fined R10 each.”
