MONEY Smart Week recently proved its presence was needed.
Prem Govender, chairman of the Financial Services Consumer Education Foundation, said: “Money Smart Week shows that the public needs more education about their rights as consumers of financial products and services.”
Education foundation and its partners, the National Treasury, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, the National Consumer Financial Education Committee, held an event for Soweto residents at Maponya Mall. Visitors were asked to bring their IDs and other documents related to businesses that they worked at years ago.
Local resident, Elizabeth Nkutha, said: “I was once employed at Republic Brushware, a Joburg company in the 1980s.
“I had to leave when I fell pregnant.
“Back then, pregnancy was a career breaker.”
Smart Money Week staff took the details of everyone who had the right documents. They vowed to search for any money that might be owed to them.
Similar operations happened in Mamelodi, Tembisa and Alexandra.
