EVERY year parents spent lots of money on their children’s school uniforms and supplies.

And for many it’s a struggle to get everything they need before the new school year starts.

Karabo Pitso from Pimville, Soweto, was a pupil at Emshukantambo Secondary School and donated some of her old school shirts to his former school.

“As with many other school students every year, I celebrated after writing my final exams.

“During the celebrations we wrote different messages on each other’s shirts. But as part of the celebrations, I also made it a point to donate my school uniform to the less fortunate.”

Tankiso Makhetha said: “We all celebrated but not all of us destroyed our uniforms, books and other materials.

“I used one shirt during the celebration because I also wanted to have a piece of my school history with me for years to come.

“But the good thing is most of my school uniform will go back to the school – this includes two trousers, a jersey and two shirts. I advise those who will be doing matric this year to do the same.”

SunEducation spoke to a few parents to find out as to how much they spent on books and uniforms.

Mary Molokwanesaid: “My daughter Ofentse is starting grade R this year and so far, I have spent R300 on stationary but I still need to buy some more.

“Ofentse’s uniform, which includes two shirts, a dress, a pair of shoes, socks, a tie and a school tunic, has already cost me R1 000.

“I still have to buy sportswear and a school jersey in the next few months, depending on my budget.”

Mantsho Makhutla said: “My son Lesidi Makhutla started high school at Madibane Secondary School in Diepkloof this year and I was surprised to learn that a school tie cost about R150 and R90 for a pair of school socks.

“I spent more than R1 000 on materials besides stationery. I still have to buy another tie, a pair of socks, a jersey and school bag. I spent the last R130 I have and must wait until I can afford the remaining items.”
