POVERTY is a feature of society which breaks people.
This is why we need to celebrate clubs, stokvels, societies and other groups who uplift their communities.
Ten Brothers is such a society. Its members are from Krugersdorp extension 14, Mogale City.
Ten Males was originally started by 10 men in 2008.
Chairman Walter Molotsi told SunStokvel: “We enjoy working as a team so allowed a few people to join us.”
Ten Brothers currently has 13 members which includes Pinky Letsokaneto, the widow of a previous member, Inch.
“She was an amazing part of the team so we are fortunate to have her as a proper member.”
Walter said losing Inch was the most painful experience they had experienced together.
“We are joined together by a powerful bond. It’s needed for the work we do in the community. Inch and Pinky were a big part of that. When we worked on a project, the two of them were very handy. With their dedication and effort, we all we finished our work faster.”
When the members meet every month, they each contribute R200. Contributions are followed with payments of R50 for food and R30 for drinks.
The R200 is saved in an account for when a member or a close relative dies.
“We give R5 000 to the surviving family to help cover funeral costs.
But with prices rising as they are, we are planning to increase the payout to R7 000 or R8 000.”
“The problem with inflation in Mzansi is that it makes our money worthless every time we hold a meeting.
“It’s difficult because many of us have to survive on piece jobs, grants or pension funds.
“If you want join us and live with less stress because you’re protected as part of the team, please do so,” said Walter.
