THE third Sharpeville Food Festival will take place in a few weeks time, with bigger and better activities than before.
SunFood spoke to founder and organiser Romeo Malete, who said they managed to seal some interesting deals for this year.
“Along with Daily Sun and Sunday Sun, our partners also include Emfuleni local municipality and NDS Chefs Academy.
“The academy will be the festival’s official vendors. The festival has been incorporated into the curriculum.
“Its best student and professional chefs are being selected to take part in the event.”
Malete added that there is lots of space available to other interested food vendors. This year’s festival will have a bigger music stage and a secure kiddies area.
“While we have not yet released the artists’ line-up, they are all booked. There will be lots of others surprises in store for visitors.
The popular helicopter rides will be back.
“We want to put Sharpeville on the map as Africa’s fun food, music and drink kasi.
The history of the festival
“The Sharpeville Food Festival idea was started because online searches about Sharpeville only linked to articles about the horrific Sharpeville massacre and nobody wants to visit a place only known for massacres.
“It was then we realised that, as branding and marketing experts, we had the right skills to remake and rebrand Sharpeville into an attractive tourist destination.
“We wanted to capture fresh video and image content to make our iconic township a place to visit for entertainment.
“We have invested in Sharpeville’s future so younger people have something to enjoy.”
