UNEMPLOYMENT is one of the most dreaded words.

Every day there are horror stories about the number of jobless in Mzansi.

But one small business is pushing hard against the negative news.

Basadi Ba Bokgoni Catering, based in Atteridgeville, Tshwane, is known in the kasi for the good quality food and service it provides.

The business caters for birthdays, weddings or any other event, private or public.

The owners have also branched into skills training. They give young girls lessons on running kitchens and cooking food. The day course costs R300 a person and involves three meals.

The course aims to teach the students enough about cooking to start their small businesses.

Speaking to SunFood about Basadi, Boitumelo Raphahlelo said: “ My friend Jeanett Kabina and I started the company in 2007.Today we provide expert catering services regardless of the size or event.

“We can manage exclusive dining services for a low-key private party or a high-profile corporate event.”

Basadi now employs five people permanently but the two businesswoman started the enterprise without money.

“We had to generate cash so Jeanett sold cosmetics and I sold handbags. After we started, we had to market it on social media. It was a struggle but our shared love of the kitchen gave us strength.

“However, there was another important motivation for us: creating jobs for and teaching skills to girls and women.

“Setting up a business office will cost a lot but we will never stop empowering youth.”
