“YOUNG people need to learn and understand their culture and traditions.”

This was the idea that inspired Hope Malau to write his first book. This chef hopes it will introduce the food he experienced growing up in Klerksdorp in the North West to many more people.

He said his former manager inspired him to write – he always pestered him to write a book of his ideas and recipes.

“It was only after I won my first Galliova Food Writer of the Year Award in 2015, that I was confident enough to put ink on a page.”

Hope said he didn’t know which subjects to tackle in his writing.

“While I knew I wanted to write something about my heritage as an African, I was also worried that I only had little exposure to the rest of Africa.

“I didn’t know if this would be a problem for my readers.

“But I was proud of my knowledge of Setshwana recipes and black cultural foods.

“So, I went ahead and wrote it all down.”

Hope decided to call his book Johanna 14. It’s a reference to a kasi slang name for cabbage because the book explores secrets behind township meals.

“Most people don’t understand the inspiration behind the title of my book – some even think it’s a biblical scripture – but they are left intrigued as soon as the meaning is explained to them.”

Johanna 14 offers a vital look into the sadly ignored Mzansi township life but far more importantly, it celebrates a culture of resilience, humanity, community and family – all through shared meals.

The book features over 60 practical recipes, from mains to sweets, including never-seen additions to local food.

Hope also included recipes his dad and uncle used when he was young.

“I loved cooking from an early age.”

Before making a name for himself in Cape Town, Hope attended the Professional Cooking Academy in Rustenburg in the North West.

Hope was a former food editor of DRUM magazine and is currently deputy food editor of Woolworths Taste magazine.
