FORMER matric pupils, Neo Rakuba and Xolo Sibaya, from Curro schools in KZN and Rustenburg, should be an example to many pupils who will be writing their matric this year and beyond.
Despite their health challenges, the two scored high marks when matric results were announced in January this year.
Neo spent much of 2016 in hospital getting chemotherapy and other medical support for his leukaemia. But he returned to school to finish grade 12 last year.
He achieved excellent results in English first additional language, maths, life orientation, physical sciences and computer app technology – he achieved an overall average of 71,43%.
Xolo, on the other hand, was awarded the Clayton Walters Trophy for triumph through adversity in recognition of his personal conduct.
He was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder that physically disables a person called King Denborough syndrome. But he never allowed the disease to limit his academic ability.
Andries Greyling, CEO of Curro Holdings, said they are happy to see pupils perform outstandingly despite their challenges.
- Though it was not only these two pupils who made their school proud, many other pupils were also honoured for their achievements. They also announced new schools, which were opened this year and others that will open their doors next year. For more information visit www.curro.co.za.
