“THROUGH hard work, sacrifice and perseverance, you have now completed your difficult journey.”
These were the words of Mary Bomela, CEO of the Mineworkers’ Investment Company, to 115 recent graduates.
The graduates were honoured by the mine company for taking the initiative to learn and enrich their minds at an awards ceremony in Joburg. They completed degrees in science, computer science, law, health sciences, engineering, economics, management and humanities at various institutions.
Mary said the JB Marks Education Trust Fund, established by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), hosted the 9th annual graduation awards this year.
For 21 years the NUM, through the JB Marks Education Trust Fund, has made sure that its members’ children get the education they need to succeed in life.
David Sipunzi, chairman of JB Marks, said: “I believe they are the generation who will create a better South Africa tomorrow.”
The top certificate category graduate was Mpho Khongoana. Mpho received 16 distinctions for an advanced certificate in pharmacy.
The top achiever in the national diploma category was Nicole Sharmelle.
Lorraine Bauer earned 15 distinctions in interior design. Janine Toffar achieved 21 distinctions for her bachelor of education degree as well as winning the overall top winner award.
