MOST parents are happy to send their kids to school.

The problem arises when they need to select the closest, best school and whether it accepts their child or not.

A report released by PropertyFox discovered that 65 of South Africa’s most popular public schools are there based on their matric results. The report also said 44% of schools give preference to pupils who live closer to the school.

These two factors have driven up the competition for hot- spot properties closest to the country’s best schools – also known as feeder-school zones.

This is why the estate agents released the Fox School Feeder Zones Guide. It’s a tool to help navigate the processes of getting your child accepted by the school you choose.

SunEducation spoke to two parents from around Gauteng to find out what they thought of feeder schools.

Modiegi Ndlovu from Diepkloof said: “I have two daughters. My first-born attends a nearby school.

“As new parents, we pushed our eldest to attend the school we were told was best.

“But we changed our minds and decided to send our youngest to the most convenient good school – we balanced reputation with how close it is.

“I made sure my youngest goes to a good school, but I also knew I had to factor in all the extra costs that come with children being at school.

“I now have a plan that will suit me best if I have to move to another area and find new schools for my daughters.”

Thabo Mokone, a DJ and morning radio show presenter of Tseratwang on Lesedi FM, said: “I prefer to keep all my boys next to me. Attending a school far away from home can be frustrating because a local school lets us directly participate in their education.

“Also, the fewer taxis my boys have to ride the better, I feel, considering how many people they hurt or kill daily.”
