Letsie LETHATA from Diepkloof zone 4, Soweto, has been an artist almost all his life.

For the past 25 years this 52-year old artist has been selling his art to generate income. Since he never had a chance to exhibit his work at art galleries he welcomes help from companies for artists to grow.

“I’m happy there are companies that want to help artists make a living.

“But schools have to be the foundation for developing talent. That’s why I’ve been teaching art at school to ensure those who have an opportunity to make a living from their talents follow their hearts,” he said.

Absa L’Atelier is asking artists to ‘Give Art Life’ as it calls for entries into this year’s contest.

The competition enters its 33rd year in 2018, marking another year of collaboration between Absa and the South African National Association for the Visual Arts.

Together, these partners aim to help further winners’ careers by providing them with industry opportunities.

This year, two more African countries, Nigeria and Namibia, will take part, increasing the number of African countries to 12.

All Top 10 finalists in the competition will go on a two-day art professionals course to help them manage their careers – a vital aspect in helping young artists turn their talent into profitable businesses.

Dr Paul Bayliss, Absa museum curator, said: “The response from young, up-and-coming artists has been incredible. It has been very encouraging to see Africa’s young artists making the most of the opportunities.”

Registration closes on 27 April 2018. To enter visit www.lateliercompetition.com.
