PLAYMAKERS should be a familiar name in every house with a school-going child.
The people behind PlayMakers, the organisation built around helping, coaching and motivating pupils, have just finished one-year training in an accredited sports administration learnership and leadership programme, organised by Tsogo Sun Montecasino for Diepsloot Safe-Hub 111.
The 11 PlayMakers are coaching staff at Safe-Hub. Between the ages of 18 and 27, they worked at the Safe-Hub throughout the year and delivered all the after-school programming to kids at the facility.
A primary requirement for every PlayMaker on the programme, all of whom are from Diepsloot, is being a positive role model for youth and commitment to change the community for the better.
The programme has been operating at Muzomuhle Primary School in Diepsloot since February 2016. It is funded through a partnership between AMANDLA EduFootball and Montecasino worth more than R4 million over three years.
This year, funding provided 640 local youngsters, from grades R to matric, access a safe environment in sports, the arts, life skills and personal development.
Nomawethu “Wewe” Sokoyi, head of facility at the Diepsloot Safe-Hub, said they worked and studied hard for the children.
They built strong relationships with young participants and made a positive impact in their lives.
“They embraced the opportunity to practically apply education in a professionally-managed workplace on a daily basis – and their professional conduct steadily improved throughout the year,” Wewe said.
