If you are between the ages of 16 and 26 years and run a valid, well-established community project that benefits and empowers your community, fill in an entry form and send it to us along with a 300-word essay, detailing your project.
Bulelani Nameka was a Young Community Shaper winner in 2016. He runs Qaqamba Learning Centre which caters for primary school children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many cannot afford uniforms, stationery and other school equipment.
Qaqamba’s mission is to groom youth to be leaders of tomorrow. Bulelani and his six volunteers help children, between the ages of nine and 13, who struggle with reading, writing, spelling and maths.
Through his project, he was also able to build a library for a primary school from which he encourages reading among the youth. He also runs a number of book clubs.
Since winning in 2016, Bulelani’s project, which once accommodated 50 pupils, now accommodates 200, from grades R to 7.
They expanded from four classrooms to six, and acquired 12 computers which are used to teach computer literacy.
Bulelani and his team don’t just teach. Qaqamba also houses an outreach project to help families devastated by fire. The team also runs a weekly soup kitchen that feeds up to 200 pupils.
Qaqamba Learning Centre has had a positive effect on the community and in young pupils.
