THE SABC’s PSL blackout may soon be over.
This is following a successful intervention by the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nithi Mthethwa, together with the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams.
Mthethwa released a statement this evening reporting that a meeting held earlier between stakeholders was successful.
“In attendance at today’s meeting, were Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza and Peter Mencer; SABC Board Chairman Bongumusa Makhathini, CEO Madoda Mxakwe, Chief Operations Officer Craig Van Rooyen; Multichoice Group Board Chairman Imtiaz Patel and CEO Calvo Mawela.”
A full statement detailing the agreement will be released tomorrow.
“The announcement that will be made will detail the terms of the agreement, subject to governance processes. Both Minster Ndabeni-Abrahams and I would like to thank all parties for showing commitment in finding a solution despite the complexity of this matter. In future we will ensure a closer working relationship between parties, to aid us in proactively seeking solutions before they become grave in nature. We also are grateful to South Africans for their patience and trust in our ability to represent their interest in this matter.
The SunTeam has reported that since the beginning of the football season, there has
not been PSL football coverage on SABC, owing to disagreement over broadcast rights.
The blackout has extended to the radio with stations barred from covering on any related PSL matters, including the bulletins.
